Introduction

In 2002, after intensive research into funding programmes and projects, PCP elected to join three Dutch water boards and one German water board under a European project called the Joint Approach for managing Flooding (JAF). JAF is funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Interreg IIB Community Initiative.

Benefits Of Joining JAF

JAF’s aims and objectives are very much in line with PCP’s vision’ it is a technical project, focused upon finding water management solutions for flood problems.
PCP saw real benefits in international cooperation with the Netherlands and Germany. An exchange programme, called ‘Input-Output’, was built into the JAF project, which would enable the different organisations to exchange expertise through a series of workshops, training courses and site visits. PCP is reviewing the application of technology and methods used successfully abroad to benefit our local area.

The PCP was granted £650,000 for prescribed work over a three-year period. This sum has been 50@ match-funded by the Environment Agency and the PCP funding partners. Somerset County Council became the signatory to JAF on behalf of the PCP.

Aim of JAF

The aim of JAF is to develop new strategies and measures, through demonstration projects and exchanging expertise between partner states, to improve water management and reduce the risk of flooding.

Further information about JAF, the partners and their work, is available at the project’s website: www.jaf.nu.
